Stories Behind the Ramparts: Sketching the Bastions of Galle

The ramparts of Galle Fort are one of the best-preserved coastal fortification systems in Asia. Enclosing the entire peninsula, the rampart walk is where land meets the Indian Ocean.

The Northern Defense Line

The landward side of the fort faced the greatest threat from inland Sri Lankan kingdoms. Thus, the Dutch constructed three massive bastions joined by thick curtain walls:

• Moon Bastion: The central fortification, once housing heavy artillery batteries.
• Sun Bastion: Guarding the harbor entrance, offering elevated views over the international cricket stadium.
• Star Bastion: Positioned to provide crossfire along the sea bay.

Point Utrecht & The Lighthouse

At the southeastern tip stands Point Utrecht Bastion, home to Galle's iconic white lighthouse. First built by the British in 1848 (and rebuilt after a fire in 1939), the lighthouse stands 26.5 meters high surrounded by palm trees.

Sketching Tip for Monolithic Structures

1. Start with low horizon lines to emphasize height and authority.
2. Render the curve of the lighthouse using soft horizontal contour lines.
3. Contrast the rigid geometric masonry of the bastion walls against the organic movement of ocean waves breaking below.
