The Essential On-Location Sketching Kit for Beginners

One of the best principles of Urban Sketchers worldwide is: Travel light, draw often. You don't need a heavy studio setup to create expressive sketches on location.

1. Sketchbook

Size: A5 or 5x8 inch landscape sketchbook. Paper weight: At least 250 to 300 gsm paper (100% cotton preferred) if using watercolor washes.

2. Pens & Pencils

  • Fountain Pen: Fitted with an EF/F nib and filled with waterproof pigment ink.
  • Water-brush or Dip Pen: Great for expressive line variation.
  • 2B Graphite Pencil: For quick compositional thumbnails.

3. Pocket Palette

A 12-color metal tin palette with key pigments: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna (essential for Galle Fort coral walls!), Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, and Sap Green.

4. Field Comfort Essentials

A lightweight folding stool or cloth cushion, a water bottle, and bulldog clips to stop sketchbook pages from flapping in ocean breezes.
