Drawing the Dutch Reformed Church: Architectural Linework

The Groote Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) is one of the oldest Protestant churches still in active use in Sri Lanka. Erected in 1755 as a thank-offering by Commander Casparus de Jong for the birth of his daughter, the church stands gracefully near the highest point of the fort.

Key Architectural Highlights

• Doric Pediments: The north and south facades feature stately Doric pediments with intricate scrolls.
• Paved Floor of Headstones: The floor inside is paved with carved gravestones transferred from the old Dutch cemetery, adorned with coats of arms, skulls, and hourglasses.
• Organ & Pulpit: The interior boasts an impressive calamander wood pulpit topped with a hexagonal canopy.

• Perspective Setup: Position yourself across Church Street to capture two-point perspective showing both the front facade and side wing.
• Linework Variation: Use fine lines for the delicate window frames and heavier, textured strokes for the aged granite steps and base walls.
